Rebirth in Against the Gods with The Ultimate System

Chapter 141: The Inner Zone

Chapter 141: The Inner Zone

Convincing Lin Xin to venture into the city proved to be a challenge. Her last visit had left her with bitter memories, but the passage of a year had bestowed a fresh perspective. As she counted the days of sickness and slumber, she realized that it had been nearly three years since she last set foot in the city's bustling streets.

Adorned in a new ensemble, Lin Xin's attire exuded elegance. She wore a pink kimono featuring a checkered black and white obi. A golden four-leaf clover pendant dangled from a delicate pink chain, complemented by a black hakama layered on top, remarkably similar to Cang Yue's Nezuko-inspired outfit. The mother-daughter resemblance between Lin Xin and Cang Yue was striking, catching the eye of onlookers from a distance.

Having acquired the art of beautification from Retsu and Mio as well as hair dressing from Yun Che, Lin Xin had been experimenting with her appearance. Unbeknownst to her, their styling was mainly a ploy to capture Yun Che's attention, an endeavor that had proved rather successful. With her sparkling blue eyes, flushed pink cheeks, and rosy lips, she seemed to shine. Today, she had joined them on the excursion into the city, accompanied by Xueli. Although the intention was a grand shopping spree, Yun Che had a prior engagement – he needed to reach the central floating island to fulfill a particular objective before the shopping spree could commence.

Their entry into the city drew the attention of many. While Yun Che and the others were accustomed to being in the spotlight, it was Lin Xin who became the subject of intense scrutiny. All eyes were on her, as if she were a swan gracefully gliding into a serene lake. The allure of her otherworldly beauty was undeniable. Uncomfortable though she may have been, she walked beside Yun Che, Xueli perched atop his shoulders, a tableau that could be mistaken for a father and daughter. As she stood beside Yun Che, there were whispers and glances that betrayed an assumption – that they were a newlywed couple. Lin Xin's cheeks burned with a mix of embarrassment and shyness, her attempt to conceal her blushing cheeks only further revealing them. Her altered appearance had rendered her virtually unrecognizable; her transformation was nothing short of remarkable.

"Is that Lin Xin? It's been years! I heard she woke up from her extended slumber just a week ago. Could this be her?"

"The last time I saw her, she was no different from a beggar. But look at her now!" Spectators recalled her previous state.

"Even little Xueli looks stunning. I've seen her without her hair obscuring her face. She's finally smiling. That girl's melancholy expression whenever I looked at her – it's gone now."

Amidst the admiring comments, a few envious gazes surfaced, predominantly from women who couldn't help but resent her beauty. Despite the admiration, there were those who couldn't suppress their bitterness, particularly among those who had disparaged her even when her husband was alive. "Hmph… so she found herself a new man after losing her husband? Guess those looks still work their magic."

"I suppose old habits die hard… once a woman with loose morals, always one…"

As the murmurs grew louder, Lin Xin clung to Yun Che's arm, her grip betraying her mixture of fear, anxiety, and anger. This was precisely why she had been reluctant to come to the city. The countless times she had been publicly humiliated due to her husband, the instances when she had begged and been treated poorly by those around her – these memories still held their grip. Amid her turmoil, Yun Che emitted a restrained version of his Haoshoku, not enough to render anyone unconscious, but sufficient to instill fear.

Under Yun Che's penetrating stare, the naysayers fell silent, their voices quelled by the Haoshoku aura of intimidation he exuded. The memory of their previous encounters, during which they had clashed with Wen Chai and the bandits, returned to their minds. The realization dawned that the individuals accompanying Lin Xin were the very ones who had fiercely defeated the formidable elite bandits. The people who dared confront them were clearly courting disaster within the city limits.

As the crowd hushed, Lin Xin offered Yun Che a silent yet warm smile, gratitude evident in her eyes. His presence provided her a shield from the world's judgment. It was high time to shove back the taunts that had haunted her for so long. Little did the crowd know of Lin Xin's true potential; if they understood her capabilities, they might have begged to become her loyal followers a thousand times over. However, knowledge of a divine cultivator would prompt their submission, but Yun Che hoped that Lin Xin's innate kindness would remain intact even as she recovered her strength.

Walking through the city, Lin Xin's memories surged forth. Each place they passed triggered a wave of nostalgia. These were the same spots her late husband had taken her to during their cherished outings. With every step, her eyes glistened with unshed tears, and before she knew it, a single tear escaped her gaze, slipping down her cheek, a testament to the precious memories she held within her heart.

Sensing her mother's sudden melancholy, Xueli turned her head with a concerned expression. "Mama?"

"It's alright, Xueli… Mama just recalled a sad memory all of a sudden," Lin Xin reassured her with a forced smile, though the weight of that memory still lingered heavily within her.

As they continued, their path led them toward the city's central island – a place reserved for the elite and affluent members of society. This city was distinctly bifurcated: the outer zone accommodated the common folk, like themselves, while the inner section harbored the privileged. The residents of the inner zone held a deep-seated disdain for those outside, seemingly repulsed by the very idea of mingling with commoners. The entrance to the inner zone was guarded, its imposing copper walls and golden gateways a visual testament to the stark class division.

More than just symbolic, this barrier encapsulated the disparity between wealth and poverty, the gateway crafted from high-quality wood and adorned with gold plating, reflecting the chasm that separated the haves from the have-nots.

"Halt…" One of the guards stationed at the entrance addressed them as they approached the threshold to the inner zone. Cloaked in gilded armor, these guards represented the elite's enforcers, exuding an air of superiority. They cast an appraising glance over the women in the group, their hearts racing at the mere thought of exploiting the situation. Duty restrained them – if not for their professional obligations, they might have exploited these women, indulging their vile desires. After all, they held the power, and in this city, their actions often went unchecked.

"An inner zone permit is required for entry. Commoners like you wouldn't possess such a thing," the guard replied haughtily to Yun Che's calm inquiry.

"Inner zone permit? What's that supposed to be?" Yun Che inquired, his tone composed yet firm.

"Something you commoners couldn't afford. It's a mandatory permit for all those who belong to the inner zone," the guard responded, his gaze lingering on the women present. He couldn't help but emphasize their inferior status, confident in his position of authority as an elite law enforcer.

Yun Che maintained a disinterested expression on his face before he pressed on, "Ohhh… then tell us where we can acquire such permits."

The guard regarded him for a moment before erupting into laughter. "Hahaha… look at all of you. It's laughable to think that commoners like you could afford them."

With an unflinching demeanor, Yun Che arched an eyebrow, almost mocking the guard. "And if we could?"

The guard's laughter ceased abruptly as he sneered, "You're daring, I'll give you that. Fine then… one permit costs ten thousand gold. Can you scrape up that much?"

"Ten thousand?!? Yun Che, this is pure extortion!" Cang Yue's Tenteikura-aided voice echoed in their minds. Yun Che nodded subtly before directing his attention to Lin Xin. "How valuable is gold here?"

"A single gold coin can sustain a commoner's family for five months. Yun Che, ten thousand gold is exorbitant. Even if we pooled everything we have, it wouldn't suffice for one permit, let alone six," Lin Xin explained. She recollected how he had used up all his gold coins during Mio's and Retsu's extravagant food spree in Gao Ling City. The only coins he possessed now were purple ones, obtained from the system recently as a reward for dismantling the elite bandits. There were also some silver coins, a remnant from the same mission, intended for their shopping expedition.

"Hmm, what about purple gold?" The mere mention of purple gold left the elite guards dumbfounded. Purple gold was the exclusive domain of the Huan Family members; even the elites within this zone lacked access. This young man's assertion must surely be a bluff.

Lin Xin was taken aback by Yun Che's familiarity with purple coins. Recovering quickly, she shared the knowledge her husband had imparted to her. "Purple gold? Each coin is worth roughly a hundred thousand gold. A single piece is enough to secure a comfortable life within the inner zone."

Mio calculated swiftly, her expression brightening as she addressed Yun Che. "Danna-sama, with that much, we can purchase the six permits."

"Yuu-kun, it's not just enough, it's a lavish surplus. We could allocate the remainder for food. I've always wondered about the cuisine within the inner zone," Retsu chimed in with an infectious grin, echoed by Mio. Yun Che could only sigh; even in this moment, these women's minds were fixed on food. Meanwhile, Xueli laughed atop his head, while Cang Yue joined in with a soft giggle. Her Nezuko-inspired appearance truly added an element of charm.

The remaining guards watched in astonishment. This youth was nonchalantly discussing purple gold as though it were mere trifles. White gold was already a rarity among them, and now he was tossing around the concept of purple gold. Yun Che produced a purple coin from his pocket and flicked it toward the guard obstructing their way. "Here, consider this payment for six permits. May we proceed now?"

Witnessing this, the onlookers were stunned. Could a person like him, who appeared to be a commoner, truly possess a purple coin? How was it possible?

Neither that they know that he's not only wielded immense cultivation power but also unimaginable wealth. His ability to indulge in lavish feasts daily, without any concern for expenses, was a testament to his affluence. Lin Xin and Xueli exchanged glances, both appreciating the realization that their savior was not just a formidable cultivator but also incredibly wealthy. This new knowledge served to solidify their gratitude; he had not only saved them from peril but had also ensured their well-being and sustenance.

"Big Brother, you're amazing," Xueli praised, gently patting his head. As for Yun Che, he merely cast a sidelong glance, as if purple coins were inconsequential trinkets to him. He possessed an abundance of these coins, accumulated through various wealth-oriented quests, far surpassing the city's limited value. To him, purple coins were just as plentiful as dirt.

As their journey progressed, Yun Che couldn't help but marvel at the unexpected turn of events. The value of wealth was drastically different in various realms, highlighting the disparity between his home and this foreign land. The distinction in the worth of currency was akin to the distinction between their societal norms – a stark reminder that even within unfamiliar territories, power and wealth could shape destinies.

The guards fell into a tense silence as they held the purple coin in their hands, but a sinister smile gradually crept across their faces. The prospect of keeping this coin and instantly elevating themselves to elite status within the zone was tantalizing. A commoner like this, they believed, couldn't possibly possess an item befitting an elite. He must have pilfered it from somewhere – that was their reasoning. The guard clutching the coin sneered once more before his voice dripped with accusation, "Hey brat, where did you swipe this coin from?"

Observing their tactics, Yun Che inwardly sighed, fully aware of their scheme. "Steal? Seriously… are you attempting to confiscate my coin by accusing me of theft? Do you have any evidence?"

"Kid, stealing a purple coin is a grave offense. The coin itself is evidence enough. Our word is law. Disobey us, and we might just have you executed for breaking our regulations," the guard asserted, intending to manipulate his words to their advantage. The surrounding guards began to converge on them, and Lin Xin's apprehension was palpable as they drew near.

"Ah, the usual strategy…accuse me of theft, then snatch the coin for yourselves. Although, it's certainly worth more than your collective lives." Yun Che's bored expression conveyed his disdain for their antics. Their ulterior motives were glaringly obvious, yet they had chosen to make this situation unnecessarily problematic.

"Kid, you're in hot water now – defying the law, appropriating a valuable treasure, and resisting arrest. Prepare for the consequences. Men, detain this young man in the name of justice, and escort the ladies to the barracks for 'questioning.'"

"Yun Che, what should we do?" Lin Xin clung to him anxiously, gripping his arm as if it were a lifeline. Meanwhile, perched atop his head, Xueli remained remarkably composed. Having witnessed him dispatch numerous bandits, these guards held no intimidation for her. As the spectators cautiously retreated, they recognized the futility of intervening when the elite golden guards were involved.

"Have no fear…," he reassured Lin Xin, mustering a comforting smile.

"Brat… you'll come with us…" Before the approaching guards could reach them, a woman with braided hair abruptly materialized before them. In stark contrast to her true aura, her current demeanor was devoid of any killing intent as she approached them, her smile radiating sweetness. The guards found themselves captivated by her presence, ensnared by her charm. Yet, before they could react, she extended her hand toward one of them, her fingertip coming into contact with his forehead...

"giggle… You're quite the eyesore," she murmured before delivering a gentle tap, or more a flick.

The guard let out a guttural scream as he was hurled through the air by a simple flick, crashing into the golden gateway and causing it to crack under the impact. The guard, clad in his formidable golden armor, the strongest in their faction, had been sent hurtling by a young woman barely in her twenties. The audacity of this scenario was incomprehensible – a single flick achieving what should have been impossible.

"Wow, Retsu Onee-chan is so strong!" Xueli's delighted voice rang out, her confidence bolstered by the presence of her Onee-chans.

One of the guards, his bravado faltering, jabbed his spear in Retsu's direction. "You… how dare you defy the authority of the Golden Guards? Do you even comprehend who we are?"

"Don't know… don't care… What I do know is that you're all a bunch of eyesores." Retsu retorted with her characteristic smile, clapping her hands together casually.

"We are the Golden Guards! Our word is law in this city… If you persist in this defiance, you shall incite the wrath of the—" The guard's words were cut short as the woman with the butterfly clip appeared before him, her hand poised in a graceful flick before she bestowed him with a radiant smile.

"Mouuu… enough of your babbling. flick"

In the blink of an eye, the guard was propelled toward the gate, his armor audibly cracking upon impact. Yun Che was genuinely impressed by the controlled power they wielded. Rather than massacring their attackers, they were only employing a flick. It appeared that they were exercising restraint, perhaps out of consideration for Lin Xin and Xueli. If not for these two, these assailants might have suffered a far harsher fate.

"Men, attack with lethal force!" The commander bellowed to his subordinates, who heeded his command and advanced with swords and spears in hand. Lin Xin, already trembling with fear, clung to Yun Che for comfort, but the enigmatic man retained his calm demeanor. With a heavy sigh, he addressed his companions, "Ladies, try to minimize the damage, if you can."

"Haiiii…" they chorused merrily, their smiles belying the immense power they were about to wield. Swiftly, they scattered throughout the area, each delivering a flick to the guards, who were sent hurtling into the gate without any semblance of resistance. Lin Xin shut her eyes, bracing for the chaos, only to open them and find herself utterly stunned. These guards were a league above the Huan Family's thugs, considered elite law enforcers; yet, they were rendered helpless, sent sprawling to the gate by a mere flick. The spectators, who had once viewed these guards as invincible, could scarcely believe their eyes. It took just a flick, not brutal violence or fierce combat, to lay them low.

"Just… just a flick," one spectator murmured in disbelief.

"You… you… you…" The commander's fury raged within him, but he was powerless to confront them. He could only rely on the might of the Huan Family to address this situation. Little did he know…

"What in the world is happening here?!?" A commanding voice resounded as a grand carriage approached the gate, accompanied by a retinue of Golden Guards. The spectators recognized the significance of a golden carriage – a symbol of immense power within the city, second only to the Huan Family. It belonged to the city's lord himself.

The shaken commander regained his composure, glaring once more at Yun Che's party. "Prepare for the consequences now, brat."

"Very well, more soup for us then," Yun Che quipped, cracking his knuckles.

"Onii-chan… where's the soup?" Xueli inquired, tilting her head in confusion.

"Yun Che, we should leave while we still can," Lin Xin urged, clutching his arm anxiously yet remaining tethered to the ground. He placed a reassuring hand atop hers, meeting her gaze before speaking softly, "Xin'er, have faith… Don't you trust us? Plus, I'm attempting to reach that island without resorting to flying."

As the carriage door swung open, a familiar face was unveiled, recognized by all present. It was the elderly man who had intervened to save Lin Xin and Xueli from the clutches of the bandits, none other than the city lord himself, Huan Bei.

"City lord, these individuals, along with the women, have purportedly stolen a valuable treasure and harmed our esteemed Golden Guards while resisting arrest. We implore you to mete out justice on our behalf," the commander declared, trying to put on a facade of subservience in the hopes that the city lord would mobilize his guards against these apparent offenders. However, his gestures were met with utter disregard.

"Granpa Bei!!!" Xueli's voice rang out, her recognition of the old man drawing curious gazes from the onlookers. Did this little girl share a personal connection with the city lord? And to address him as 'Granpa' – could they be that close?

"Xueli, my dear child, and Lin Xin, you appear to be in improving health each day… Yun Che, my lad, it's a pleasure to see you here as well," Huan Bei acknowledged the trio with a warm smile, brushing aside the commander's presence. The commander's feigned smile, however, turned into a grimace as he observed this interaction.

Yun Che raised his hand in a casual salute. "Hey there… sorry about your guards. We intended to procure entry permits, only to find ourselves on the receiving end of a swindle. We simply returned the favor."

"While your actions resulted in an assault on my guards, they certainly needed a lesson in humility," Huan Bei acknowledged, rubbing his forehead in a gesture that suggested he was well aware of these guards' reputation. It seemed that their insubordinate behavior had finally met its match.

The commander struggled to process the unfolding events. This couldn't be real. The city lord, the most powerful figure in the city, had brushed aside his grievances. It seemed that someone had dared to oppose these guards and, in doing so, challenged their authority.

Attempting to salvage the situation, the commander hastened to the city lord's side, launching into his skewed version of events. "City lord, these individuals pilfered this coin and—"

"Enough of your prattle," Huan Bei snapped, his fury evident as he silenced the commander with a resounding slap. The city lord's protective stance toward these commoners was unfathomable – he had struck the commander on their behalf? The city lord confiscated the coin from the commander's grasp, examining it closely. "So you accuse them of stealing this purple coin? Where is your evidence? There's no record of any item stolen from the treasury."

The guards' commander stood in silence, his accusation crumbling to dust as he realized he had endeavored to deceive and extort these individuals for the sake of a single purple coin. Worse yet, this was the city lord's guest, and these were the very same individuals who had challenged and overpowered his guards. He was but a pebble facing a mountain, and now he could only rue his greed and naiveté. "This one failed to perceive the mountain before him. I beseech your pardon."

The city lord's attention shifted away from the commander, and with a graceful gesture, he returned the coin to Yun Che. "Why not allow me to escort you to my residence? It would be an honor to host the savior of my friend's family."

"A tempting offer, yet we are pressed for time. We hope to reach the central island before sunset," Yun Che courteously declined.

"Then, at the very least, let me provide you with transportation by carriage. Please, consider it a gesture of apology for this unfortunate misunderstanding," Huan Bei insisted.

Yun Che glanced at Lin Xin, who nodded in agreement. With the city lord offering them a ride, it seemed only proper to accept, preserving their host's dignity. Thus, they nodded their consent and entered the opulent carriage, prompting astonishment from the onlookers. The commander, left to stew in his own remorse, had only himself to blame. He had fallen prey to deception, undermined his own guards, faced down by women, and received no support from the city lord himself. Basically, he was tricked, backstabbed and possibly bamboozled by them. His career was now at stake, and he could only lament his avaricious pursuit of a solitary purple coin.

As the carriage journeyed on, Huan Bei listened attentively to Lin Xin's narrative and shook his head in disappointment. "A city entry permit costs a mere fifty gold coins. It appears you were indeed targeted for a scam. However, as my esteemed guests, I shall present you with this seal." He offered them a seal, marked with the insignia of the city lord. "This is the city lord's seal of approval, usually reserved for emperors and kings. It grants you entry to the inner city at your convenience. Furthermore, should any unfounded accusations arise, I shall turn a blind eye if you choose to rectify the matter through force. I only request that you exercise moderation."

The gesture earned approval from Yun Che and his companions. The seal would grant them access beyond the outer city walls, and with it, Lin Xin could occasionally venture into the city for her culinary supplies.

"Yun Che… I must admit, I'm curious about something. How did you come into possession of a purple coin?" Huan Bei inquired, his tone rife with intrigue.

"Hmm… Would you believe it if I told you that all the ladies here and I hail from a world beyond this barrier?" Yun Che revealed, raising the possibility that they were outsiders.

"With the ease you subdued both the bandits and the Golden Guards, and with whispers that you even stood against Madam Ling of the Huan Family, I am inclined to believe you," Huan Bei remarked. The mention of Madam Ling drew Lin Xin's gaze downward, but Cang Yue's comforting presence helped soothe her distress. While she had been absent during that confrontation, she knew of the despair that the mere mention of Madam Ling's name could evoke.

"News travels fast, it seems," Yun Che acknowledged, not anticipating that their defiance of the formidable Madam Ling would spread so rapidly.

"Yun Che, Lin Xin, and all of you, the Huan Family will not take kindly to your defiance, particularly from Madam Ling. Although she was a dear friend's mother, she wields immense power and holds a prominent position within the family. Even I am powerless against her. What's more, your act of nullifying the Huan Family's guardian lightning is unheard of. They will undoubtedly seek retribution," Huan Bei warned.

"If they so much as lay a finger on Lin Xin or Xueli, we will obliterate the Huan Family," Yun Che declared firmly, receiving resolute nods of agreement from his companions. The notion that someone would stand against the mighty Huan Family for Lin Xin was baffling to her, yet he seemed as determined as Yun Che. Just like him, she wondered what she had done to deserve such loyalty.

"Your sentiments echo those of my late friend. Now, who is this young girl with you? Is she your daughter? And are these ladies your wives?" Huan Bei inquired, prompting Mio and Retsu to blush intensely. His perception led him to believe they were Yun Che's wives, while the mention of Cang Yue being his daughter baffled them.

"No, no… While they are my soon-to-be wives, this young girl… believe it or not… was the fuchsia-haired woman from before," Yun Che responded, gesturing toward Cang Yue.

"The red-haired woman? Her? How is that even possible? And why has her form changed so dramatically? It's almost beyond belief," Huan Bei mused, eying Cang Yue's Nezuko-like appearance. She bore no resemblance to the fuchsia-haired beauty they had encountered earlier. It was as if she had transformed into an entirely different person. What manner of cultivation could cause such a profound change in her physical form?

Yun Che chuckled at Huan Bei's incredulity. "Haha… in the outside world, incredibility is the norm. Transforming one's appearance like this is quite commonplace."

"The outside world… I can't help but wonder what lies beyond," Huan Bei pondered aloud, gazing at the distant sun. He had often contemplated the lives, creatures, and civilizations that might exist beyond the barrier. If Yun Che, formidable enough to rival an army of a thousand men, struggled to survive before his arrival here, what hope could the average individuals of their realm possess? Could they even withstand the challenges posed by outsiders? The Huan Family, formidable in their realm, might be insignificant in comparison to the beings from beyond.

Xueli's curiosity was ignited, and she addressed Yun Che with enthusiasm. "Onii-chan… will you one day take me to see the outside world?"

Lin Xin, intrigued by the notion, added, "I share her curiosity, Yun Che. I often wonder about the life beyond our realm. What kind of life did I lead before my late husband found me? I can't recall any memories from back then."

"In due time, Xueli, Xin'er. One day, I will unveil the paradise that exists in that world. Life there might be arduous, but we shall shield both of you," Yun Che reassured them.

As the carriage traversed the city, they were treated to a view of the inner city's grandeur. It was precisely as they had surmised – a realm of luxury and opulence. The denizens adorned themselves in lavish attire, and the stark contrast between the inner and outer regions was palpable. Luxurious homes, ornate carriages, and ancient architecture adorned the landscape. It was evident that the inner city housed affluent families and young elites. Yun Che could only hope that none were foolish enough to provoke them. The luxurious carriage eventually brought them to the heart of the city – their intended destination.

As they arrived at the designated location, Yun Che found himself instantly stunned, while the others were equally mesmerized. The area surrounding the floating island was adorned with ancient Isu structures, each perfectly preserved. It was as if they had transitioned from an ancient Chinese-style district into a futuristic Isu realm. Crystal lights floated in the air, casting a soft, enchanting glow. Massive, intricately designed pillars, floors, and walls adorned the sanctum. Despite the passage of thousands of years, this place seemed untouched by time. It reminded Yun Che of his encounter with Xuyi's tomb, the old and the new colliding seamlessly. The second tomb, which mirrored this style, was just as immaculate, if not cleaner. According to the city lord, the place was used for worship by the city's residents, though it had been inaccessible to commoners since the inner zone transformed into a wealthy district. The central floating island, they had now approached, was larger up close than it had appeared, encompassed by a protective Isu barrier.

"Remarkable," Yun Che murmured, his awe palpable as he beheld the perfectly preserved wonders before him.

"Danna-sama, this is unlike anything I've ever seen," Mio exclaimed in amazement.

"Yuu-kun, this is truly a sight to behold," Retsu added, her excitement evident.

"Why didn't we see this from above?" Retsu wondered aloud, her surprise still lingering.

"Why don't you all wait here while I speak with the head priest to gain permission for your entry? This sanctum holds great significance in our city. Even those from the inner zone aren't granted unrestricted access. This is especially true for commoners," Huan Bei suggested, excusing himself as he entered the grand sanctum through its towering gates. In his absence, Xueli, Mio, Retsu, and the others ventured further, exploring the captivating beauty of the place. Their attire set them apart, garnering both curious and disdainful glances from the passersby. These responses were likely rooted in their commoner status, making them a rarity in this upper echelon district. Nevertheless, they remained unfazed by the judgmental stares, refusing to engage in conflict.

Meanwhile, Yun Che stood nearby, captivated by the surroundings. Lin Xin stood beside him, appearing more nostalgic than entranced. It came as no surprise to Yun Che; he had anticipated as much. "Xin'er, are you alright?"

Her response was tinged with wistfulness. "Yes… yes, I am. I just experienced a rush of memories. Believe it or not, I used to work here as a local priestess."

"Used to?" Yun Che inquired, intrigued by her revelation.

Lin Xin's gaze remained fixed on the temple as she began to recount her past. "Yes, back then, my husband was still affiliated with the Huan Family. He allowed me to work here as a priestess. He believed that the sanctum was a place untouched by the family's influence. While they were powerful, the people of the sanctum held a unique respect and power of their own. Most of the workers here were commoners, and even those from the inner zone treated them with reverence. So, I had no trouble interacting with them until…"

She paused, her expression growing distant before she continued, "I don't recall all the details clearly. I continued my duties as a priestess even when I was pregnant with Xueli. The head priest was kind enough to ease my workload during that time. And after Xueli was born, he allowed me to continue despite my motherly responsibilities. However, things changed when that mysterious condition struck me."

Yun Che nodded in understanding, encouraging her to continue.

"But since that moment, I often wondered if I had any value to offer. I couldn't fulfill my duties or even properly care for Xueli. My body grew weaker by the day, and I would often lose consciousness for hours. And even when I was awake, I felt perpetually drained, often falling back asleep. This continued until last year… when I fell into an eternal sleep." Her voice quivered as the memories resurfaced, her gratitude for the present mingling with the pain of the past.

Yun Che placed a comforting arm around her, pulling her closer. "It's alright now. You're safe, and Xueli is happy. That's what truly matters. The past is behind us. Remember that. I saved you for both your sakes."

"Thank you," she whispered, her voice fragile. Lin Xin asked if she could lean on his shoulder for a moment, and he agreed. With her head nestled against his shoulder, she found solace in his presence, allowing herself to be vulnerable, even if only for a moment. Lin Xin's heart began to mend as she opened up to him, revealing pieces of her pain.

"Mama, look at this flower. It's so pretty, isn't it?" Xueli's cheerful voice rang out as she returned with a vibrant flower clutched in her hand. Lin Xin hastily wiped her tears and straightened herself, lifting her head from Yun Che's shoulder. Concern flashed in Xueli's eyes as she asked, "Mama, are you alright?"

A warm smile replaced Lin Xin's earlier distress, and she assured her daughter, "Yes, sweetheart, Mama is fine. I was just reminiscing about my time here."

"Did Mama work here?" Xueli's curiosity piqued.

"Yes, I used to be a priestess," Lin Xin replied, her smile widening as she basked in the glow of her daughter's innocent joy.

"Mama was a priestess? That's so cool!" Xueli's eyes sparkled with admiration.

"That's right," Lin Xin affirmed, the darkness of her past momentarily banished by the light of her daughter's enthusiasm. Yun Che watched this exchange with a softened expression, hoping that the healing power of time and love would continue to mend the wounds of Lin Xin's heart.

As the calm atmosphere began to settle within the sanctum, an unwelcome disruption shattered the peace. A voice, dripping with condescension, sliced through the air just as things seemed to be normalizing. Emerging from the corners of their awareness were three young men and a statuesque woman, all adorned in the trappings of luxury. Their entitled air and imperious expressions were impossible to miss, drawing an almost immediate air of disdain from Yun Che's group.

"These commoners dare to defile our sanctum? The audacity," one of the young men sneered, his tone laced with contempt.

Unperturbed by their arrival, Yun Che regarded them with a steady gaze, his expression a mix of curiosity and dismissal. "And may I who you people are?"

The young masters exchanged knowing glances, their assumption of authority evident in their stances. They expected their status to grant them free rein in this domain, but little did they realize that their arrogance was about to be challenged in an unexpected way.

"They might be commoners, but their beauty...—" One of the young masters began, only to be silenced by the sight before him. Their gazes were arrested by the graceful figures of Retsu, Mio, and Lin Xin, who stood before them like living embodiments of elegance and allure. Their stunning appearances rendered them temporarily speechless, even as the rest of the onlookers gaped in awe at the unexpected spectacle.

"I must admit, these women possess a beauty that rivals our own," one of the young masters murmured, his focus solely fixated on the enchanting trio.

Amid this mesmerization, a rotund woman among them decided to make herself heard. Fanning herself ostentatiously, she declared with a saucy grin, "But don't overlook me, darlings! I am a spectacle more splendid than any commoner here."

Yun Che's brows twitched as he watched her performance, his patience waning at the sight of her exaggerated antics. Her overly enthusiastic hip swaying left him more nauseated than impressed.

"Commoners like you should know your place and address me accordingly!" one of the young masters asserted, his tone dripping with condescension.

With a dismissive tilt of his head, Yun Che retorted, "And who are you to be addressed with such reverence?"

As tensions flared, another young master chimed in with a sardonic grin towards Retsu. "How about you, dear beauty? Care to join our esteemed company? You'd be a splendid addition."

"And you," the rotund woman cooed, as she leered suggestively towards Yun Che. "you could be my plaything. My current roster lacks the vigor I desire."

Retsu and Mio's expressions darkened, their faces a canvas of lethal intent. The provocative comments and insinuations seemed to strike a nerve, kindling their fury. Their eyes blazed with a promise of violence that required no verbal confirmation. The rotund women radiated an aura that suggested they would tear these arrogant individuals limb from limb if given the slightest excuse.

"You commoners exist only to cater to our whims," one of the young masters asserted, a haughty smile playing on his lips.

"And you, my dear," another interjected, eyeing Lin Xin, "appear ripe for the taking. A married woman is like a luscious fruit, even more enticing than a mere virgin."

The discomfort was evident in Lin Xin's eyes as she hugged her daughter close, her protective instincts kicking in despite her trust in Yun Che. Even though she knew he would never let anything happen to them, the audacity of these individuals rattled her.

Another young master's gaze shifted to Cang Yue and Xueli, and his words took a disturbing turn. "The little ones are adorable. Perhaps I'll relieve you of their company."

An undercurrent of rage surged within Yun Che. He had hoped for a peaceful respite within the sanctum, but it seemed that trouble followed him no matter where he went.

As the offensive comments continued to flow, Yun Che's temper ignited. "You dare utter such words in my presence? You are truly courting death."

The young masters' expressions twisted in shock at Yun Che's vehement response. They had anticipated submission and had been wholly unprepared for the fiery defiance that met their arrogance. Yet, as his anger flared, Yun Che maintained his composure, refusing to let this encounter escalate any further.

"Huuuuuu, and I'll take the braided and that butterfly clip, girl. These two are even more beautiful than those slaves I had back home."

Yun Che's gaze darkened the moment Retsu and Mio were mentioned, and his voice held an icy edge as he retorted, "You think you're entitled to decide their fates, do you?"

Another one of the young masters arrogantly chimed in, his tone dripping with disregard, "Piss off. Both of the ladies are mine. Why don't you take that mother over there? Women are ripe after they're married. Some say they taste even better than virgins."

Lin Xin's body tensed, and she instinctively hugged her daughter closer, creating a protective barrier between them and these insolent intruders. Her unease was palpable, but beneath it all was a mother's unyielding determination to shield her child from any harm that might befall them. The unsettling atmosphere, though, couldn't overshadow her trust in Yun Che. While fear lingered, it was dampened by the belief that he would safeguard them against any threat.

The situation had escalated beyond mere annoyance. Yun Che could feel his patience wearing thin, his usual composed demeanor now a façade for the building rage within him. These individuals had crossed a line, and he was ready to assert his authority in no uncertain terms.

His voice resonated with authority as he addressed them, "You dare utter such vile words in my presence? You are truly testing the limits of my patience."

The young masters exchanged incredulous glances, shock rippling through their expressions. Their initial assumptions about Yun Che had proved wildly inaccurate, and their arrogance was quickly transformed into uncertainty. They had stumbled upon someone whose confidence matched their own, if not exceeded it. Yun Che's aura and his unwavering gaze made it clear that he would not tolerate their insults any further.

One was initially eyeing Cang Yue and Xueli before licking his lips. "I wanted those little girls with me. Don't get my way."

"Who wants to? Besides….everyone knows you like little kids to satisfy you." One shot the other young master, and Yun Che was disgusted. Someone here lusted after children?

These aristocrats seemed even more twisted than those cultivators Yun Che had crossed paths with in the past. They didn't just target adults; they set their sights on children too. The audacity! Yun Che tried to remain calm, but his female companions were barely containing their fury. Mio and Retsu looked ready to strike at any moment, and their menacing presence made it clear that they were waiting for Yun Che's signal to unleash their wrath.

Meanwhile, Cang Yue, displaying the appearance of her Nezuko mode, retreated behind Yun Che. Her innocent and youthful look was unfortunately drawing unwanted attention. Without her usual cultivation, she was as vulnerable as any other mortal. She chose to stay behind Yun Che for protection, her face still maintaining a brave façade.

Seeing the audacity of these men, Yun Che's voice grew cold, "You have the audacity to ogle at what is mine right in front of me? Tread carefully."

One of the young masters sneered, "Do you hear this commoner speak? His audacity is nauseating. If not for my interest in these... exotic beauties, I'd have had his head mounted by now."

Yun Che responded with disdain, "All bark, no bite. You're just full of hot air."

The pompous woman twirled her fan with a smirk, her eyes wandering over Yun Che's form. "Such boldness! I love it when they play hard to get. Don't rough him up too much; I have plans for him."

Yun Che could sense the electric surge of anger emanating from Mio and Retsu. Their aura was almost palpable, a tempest of fury waiting to be unleashed. He inwardly groaned, realizing they were on the verge of revealing their fiercer, more possessive side. If he gave the order, their Yandere side would emerge right now. "Easy now," he mentally cautioned, "They're not worth it." He wouldn't allow these arrogant fools to see the true depth of his companions' strength, especially not in front of Lin Xin or Xueli. The last thing he wanted was for them to witness the darker side of those whom they held in such high esteem.

Mio's eyes darkened as a disturbing smile crept across her face. She murmured, "Danna-sama, may I have the pleasure of ripping her spine out? I assure you, I'll make it swift and almost painless."

"Yuu-kun, if you'd like, I can paint the streets with their blood. I'll even ensure they don't suffer.... too much," Retsu chimed in, her smile belying the storm of darkness lurking within.

Sighing inwardly, Yun Che knew he had to intervene before things escalated further. "Oh, there's no need for that level of violence. I'll handle this." He couldn't deny that a part of him relished the idea of teaching these arrogant fools a lesson. The crowd that had gathered around them were mostly rich inner-city dwellers, and they all seemed to be deriving some twisted entertainment from the spectacle. Not a single person among them offered to intervene or help, content to just gawk and snicker at the commotion.

They had been seeking entertainment, and it seemed they were about to get more than they bargained for. Yun Che was determined to make sure that the inner city residents learned not to mess with them.

"But... Hai~ We understand," Retsu and Mio reluctantly relented, their desire for action tempered by Yun Che's calming presence as his touch on their heads reassured them, a physical affirmation of his role as their protector. It was a dynamic they cherished in their relationship with him.

"So, you're after my precious girls? Well, then, come and give it your best shot," he taunted, his voice dripping with a mix of sarcasm and challenge.

"Persistent bastard... What are you waiting for? Get those girls for me," one of the haughty young masters ordered his guards. In response, Yun Che sidestepped deftly, evading the incoming strikes with fluid grace. This was child's play to him, and he felt a pang of excitement coursing through him. It had been weeks since he had a taste of real action, and he welcomed the opportunity.

As he danced around the attacks, he analyzed the guards' strength. "They're stronger than regular humans, but if I had to gauge them, they're at the second level of the Beginner's Profound Realm. Not much of a challenge..." he mused internally, his assessment precise and calculating.

With casual ease, he snatched a guard's weapon mid-swing, leaving the man dumbfounded. Yun Che shattered the weapon with a swift, powerful motion, reducing it to useless shards. A single, well-placed punch to the guard's abdomen rendered him unconscious, the speed and force of the blow shocking onlookers.

Addressing the others, he stated, "I'm a patient man, but there are things I won't tolerate." He moved with lightning speed, appearing in front of another guard before striking him squarely. The guard was launched through the air and collided with his young master, effectively incapacitating both. He repeated the process, dispatching the remaining personal guards with finesse.

"The individuals who wanted to take my ladies away from me," he stated, his gaze fixing on the young master and the obese woman who had triggered the altercation. The woman tried to shout accusations, but Yun Che wasn't fazed. "Honestly? We're here to visit this zone, and you wealthy folks just had to come and stir up trouble. You mess with the bull, you get the horns. So, if anyone else fancies a taste, I've got plenty to spare."

"You... you're just a commoner!"

"That's right, and yet I just took down your so-called guards. What are you going to do about it?"

Before they could retort, City Lord Huan Bei emerged from within the sanctum, his exasperation evident. "Aiyaaaa... We haven't even exchanged pleasantries, and you've already found yourselves in another mess."

"Hey, they're the ones who started it. I was just giving them a helping hand," Yun Che replied nonchalantly, his expression unapologetic.

"City lord, they've stirred up trouble in our inner zone. We demand justice!" The fat woman's voice reverberated as Huan Bei emerged from the sanctuary's entrance. The surrounding affluent individuals joined in the outcry. Yun Che couldn't help but be intrigued by the blatant double standard at play. Even though the majority knew who was truly at fault, they manipulated the situation to portray Yun Che's group as the antagonists.

Clearly exasperated, City Lord Huan Bei lifted his hand to quell the rising clamor before speaking with a sigh, "Sigh... Your cries for justice. I've dealt with enough instances of the inner zone causing problems for the commoners. I've grown weary of constantly having to intervene. You disrupt the lives of the common folk and then demand justice when they push back, painting them as the aggressors and yourselves as victims. Do you truly believe I'm showing you favor? I will uphold justice when the safety of the city is at stake. I will not arbitrate in a brawl like this. If you cause a disturbance, it's your responsibility to resolve it."

His words had a sobering effect, silencing the dissenters. They were forced to confront the reality of their actions. Kidnappings and abuses had been going unchecked, and the oppressed were finally asserting themselves. This altercation marked a pivotal moment – if word of this spread to the outer zone, it could ignite a rebellion.

"Well said, Gramps," Yun Che chimed in, offering a thumbs-up.

Huan Bei shot him a look of disdain. "Yun Che... Don't think I'm standing up for you."

Raising both hands in surrender, Yun Che conceded, "Fair enough. But you won't say anything if I defend myself, right? I'll back down... After all, I am your guest."

"Thank you... Anyway... The head priest wishes to meet with all of you. You have permission to enter. You are now guests of the sanctuary," Huan Bei conveyed. The bystanders were taken aback. These weren't ordinary commoners; they were now the sanctuary's esteemed guests. Attacking them equated to an assault on the sanctuary itself. Slowly, the crowd dispersed, leaving behind the youngsters who had sparked the altercation in the first place.

People were cautious to involve themselves further, mindful of the ramifications tied to their statuses. "Oh, by the way, for insulting the honor of my women earlier," Yun Che declared, raising his hands before snapping his fingers. In an instant, a controlled burst of air swept through the group of arrogant young masters and the haughty woman, causing them to scatter in all directions. The impact wasn't colossal, but it was sufficient to disperse them. Bewilderment overtook both the arrogant youth and the onlookers as they struggled to comprehend what had just occurred. Yun Che's party, however, remained unruffled.

"This has been on my bucket list for a while. Next time, consider picking on someone your own size," Yun Che quipped, turning away and leading his group into the sanctuary. The haughty young master and the presumptuous mistress were left to grapple with the consequences of their rash actions.

Mio and Retsu's lingering killing intent hinted that they weren't about to let the matter go easily.
