Jay Aslan: Journey to the Top

Holy...

Holy...

February 12th, 2010.

He woke up early, and in much better shape than last night. He was still a little dizzy but strangely his throat wasn't parched and he could at least think clearer now. It was weird. He knew a comatose shouldn't be able to do that, he shouldn't be able to either talk or even move at all right now and he was very much well aware of it by the odd looks of wonder some of the staff had given him. Dr. Philips and Dr. Keys had tried hiding it from him but he wasn't buying it.

What exactly had happened? He had... what? Reincarnated? It seemed crazy but he could only acknowledge what had happened to him.

He tried to sit up but groaned and fell back, it wasn't happening. For the first time since his "awakening", he took note of his surroundings. The room was partially lit by a lamp on the side of his bed, it was clean, and carefully decorated. He thought back to Nurse Jetson's words of his parents' social and financial statuses and realized he was probably in a VIP room, which was by no means a bad feeling.

He took a peek at the clock that was on the opposite wall and it was 6. He rang the bell to call someone here, he was starving honestly.

A nurse, a woman in her early twenties, came a few minutes later and asked him if he needed anything.

"Yes, I'm really hungry, is there anyway I could get something to snack on?"

Apparently that revelation startled her.

"I'm sorry Mr. Aslan, but you can't ingest solid food yet, doctor's orders. We will have to keep you on IV drips for now..."

He groaned. "For how long?"

"Dr. Philips said two weeks. It might be more or it might be less but it's the first step towards rehabilitation."

This time he was startled. "Rehab?"

She gently smiled. "Yes, in order to get back the complete use of your body you will have to undergo physical rehab."

"Right... that makes sense. So when do I start?"

She let out a chuckle at his impatience. "After your family visits you, Dr. Briziak – that's our chief physical therapist – will perform a series of test to determine the best and fastest way to get you back in shape again."

He sighed. He shouldn't be so impatient but lying all day every day in a hospital bed was not exactly his kind of fun.

"Can I at least get some water, please?" he asked.

"Of course, I'll be right back."

She left and came back a few minutes later with an unopened bottle of mineral water and a new mug. She poured me a cup and left the bottle on the bed's night-table.

"Is there anything else you need?"

He pondered while drinking and eventually asked, "Do you know when my family will be here?"

"They took the first flight available out from Boston and should be here in a couple hours barring any incident."

He thanked her and told her that it was all. She made sure he knew she was available any time and all he needed to do was ring the bell. He nodded and she left.

A couple of hours of waiting would be a little boring, he debated what to do and eventually settled on checking his body out. He tried flexing his legs and, to his delight, his muscles were responsive although his movements looked a little strained.

He really wanted to get a look at himself in the mirror but didn't want to bother the nurses for something like that. He peeked at his arms and they were pale and frail, his skin as smooth as a newborn baby's. He honestly felt naked without his tattoos, the last time his skin had been so clean, he'd been in high school. He would have to remedy to that, he only hoped his new family wouldn't be appalled.

He'd been in the entertainment industry since his teenage years, been hailed a rising star but an impromptu bar fight had quickly ended that. He had taken a stray beer bottle to the throat, and though it hadn't killed him, it had badly damaged his vocal chords. He had then watched every person who had ever been eager to please him, leave, one by one.

Even his manager whom he had always treated with sincerity, had taken his severance check and left. He had no education since he had dropped out of college to pursue his career, and ended up getting a job in a small studio as sound engineer and guitarist where he made do with the pay. His life had been a mess.

He felt a little pain in his nether regions and took off the sheet for a better look. He blanched at the catheter. Of course there was one, how else would a comatose do otherwise? His first thought was to pull it out but he immediately dismissed it, he wanted to go to the toilet but wasn't sure whether he could actually get down the bed and walk all the way there.

And no way was he going to get a nurse to bring him there, he was very fond of his dignity, thank you very much! Oh hell, his body had used that thing for 6 years already, he could afford using it a few more times.

So checking himself out was now out.

"I don't even know what kind of state my body is really in." he sighed.

[Does the host wish to review the current available stats?]

"Huh? Who?..."

No one answered. Ha... Maybe the after-effects from the car accident still lingered after all? He should probably get Dr. Keys to check him again, he was sure he had heard someone ask him about...

"Stats?..." he chuckled.
